I’m a Newfoundlander from Kilbride, which was just outside St. John’s, Newfoundland when I grew up. I have always loved the ocean and the waves, and the weather associated with it. I’m also in love with space exploration, but being a Canadian kid with glasses in the 1970’s I soon gave up on the idea of being an astronaut.
Work: I am an Oceanographer and Meteorologist, which means I can work at my first love. I currently work with unusually long period waves generated by Hurricanes and Tropical Storms, and also storm surge. I’m interested in wind waves and fog (being a Newfoundlander and hating fog would be kind of counterproductive, don’t you think)?
Interests: A bit of everything, but most of my time is spent as follows (in no particular order)
- Physical: Swimming, Cycling, Hiking, Sailing, Canoe/Kayak
- Reading
- Science Fiction and Fantasy: 2-3000 titles at home
- Alphabet Favourites (I tried to keep it to one per letter): Anderson, Asimov, Bear, Brin, Bujold, Card, Clarke, Dickson, Ellison, Farmer, Gerrold, Heinlein, Hughart, Ing, Jakes, Kay, Le Guin, Martin, McDevitt, Niven, Orwell, Pohl, Quinn, Robinson, Saberhagen, Sawyer, Scarborough, Silverberg, Simak, Simmons, Stephenson, Stevenson, Sturgeon (sorry, too many good S’s), Tolkein, Updike, Verne, Vinge, Vonnegut, Wells, Willis, Yolen, Zelazny
- Literature (I read these, but collect SF):
- Alphabet Favourites: Atwood, Burroughs, Conrad, Dickens, Eliot, Faulkner, Grimm, Heller, Irving, Jackson, Kipling, Lewis, Maugham, Not Nietche, Orwell, Poe, Rushdie, Stevenson, Twain, Uris, Verne, Whitman, Yeats, Zane(just kidding)
- Science: Math, Physics, Astronomy, Astrophysics, Oceanography, Meteorology, Fluid Dynamics, Matlab, and general stuff
- History:
- Ancient Civilisations: Celts,Irish, English, Norse, Mongol, Meso-American, China, Megalith Builders and the Beaker People,
- Recent History: Canadian, Newfoundland, Explorers (especially sailors and polar exploration), 19th Century India and the Northwest Frontier, The Great Game,
- Military and Current Events: World Wars I&II, Holocaust and Israel, Palestine, China and Tibet
- Technological: Space exploration, Aviation, Transportation, Nuclear Research, Astronomy, Information revolution, Sailing ships and Clippers, Schooners, Submarines and Submersibles, Acoustics, Oceanography and Meteorology
- Arts: van Gogh, Celtic art and Kells, Lindisfarne and Durrow, flutes, tin whistles,
- Plus eclectic choices and essays
- Science Fiction and Fantasy: 2-3000 titles at home
- Photography: I’m just starting, and most of my images are on flickr. My favourite subjects are
- landscapes, especially hiking trails and the scenery around them
- coastlines, waves, and icebergs, especially around Newfoundland and the Maritimes
- interesting historic sites and architecture
- animals, when they hold still long enough!
- occasionally people

Great site….keep it up. I am in hopes you can help me. I have a print (rather old) of a sailing vessel. I do believe that it may be one of the original “Blue Nose”. This one has a square rig forward. I was wondering if I could sent you a photo and that you may be able to let me know. Thanks–Nick
Hi,
I’d be glad to have a look. Also, here are a few images of the Bluenose II, which is a pretty good replica of the original. To get a definitive and expert opinion, I’d email the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic. It is in the Bluenose’s home town of Lunenburg, and also operates the Bluenose II.
Here is the contact information:

Hi,
Being a Newfoundlander, though far from home right now, a Bell Islander to be precise. I was feeling a little homesick today & just happened along ‘Where the Wind’s Like a Whetted Knife’. Your photos were beautiful. Thank you.

I was born in the mid forties and grew up on the Burin Peninsula. During those times I saw so much snow, sleet,
rain, and hail that I told myself at an early age…. when
I grew up I would arrange myself to be in a place where I would never have to see such weather again.
Well, I spent 41 years in the Oil and Gas Energy sector having worked and lived in 23 countries. I retired last fall ( Now 06 ) but arranged my retirement residence to be in Thailand.
That’s where I live now and I haven’t seen snow in 11 years.
And if God allows, I won’t ever again.
A man’s godda do whata man’s godda do … to find happiness.
Yes.
Hey ho brother,
I stumbled upon this site while looking for info on the Hang drum….imagine another Newfoundlander who knows about this mysterious (and elusive) instrument. My name is Curtis Andrews, from Carbonear but now I live in “town”. Don’t have the coin for a hang but sure would love one….I’m a percussionist by profession and passion. What is the latest that you have heard??
I can wait till next year..no coin right now.
From what I have read, i need to go to Switzerland(!!??)…ouch.
regards,
curtis
Hi. I enjoyed looking at the photos here today. I am actually from the Gaspereau area and know who that property belongs to. It is a beautiful area and you visited at the most picturesque time of the year.
Love your musings, and your wonderful photographs – it gives the Celt in me wings!

Hi . I am a visual artist living in Stephenville. I am looking for information on the Brig “Dispatch” which went aground just off Isle Aux Mort ,NL in 1828. The crew and Passengers (180) were rescued(all except ten).by Ann Harvey , her brother and father wit the help of a Newfoundland Dog named “Hairy Man”
I am in the process of recreating the event in Oils for a historic purposes and producing prints to sell to help the Ann Harvey Committee in their goal to have this event a national tourist spot.
If you find any Pictures of The Dispatch I would be greatfull if you woul d send them to me.
You have a great site here .
