There were some hopeful tidbits in the news this afternoon. As a result of the recent progress and the recent weather, Captain Brian Penney of the Coast Guard said that if the winds hold steady for the rest of the week, the entire fleet could be freed (Canadian Press). Here are some highlights.

As of today (to my knowledge) there are 5 Canadian Coast Guard Icebreakers involved in the rescue effort on the Front (the ice pack along the Northeast Coast and part of the East Coast of Newfoundland). I'm a Newfoundlander from Kilbride on the Avalon Peninsula. My main interests have been the ocean surface and wind from the days of my youth. In other words I'm an oceanographic meteorologist. I also developed a recent interest in photography, and have tried to use it to show what I love about the world around me.
